The Silver Surfer first appeared in The Fantastic Four #48 three-issue arc known unofficially as the Galactus Trilogy. According to Stan Lee, the Silver Surfer comicbooks became an outlet for Lee's more philosophical stories.
Created by Jack Kirby in 1966, the Silver Surfer is a metallic-skinned humanoid that travels the cosmos at the speed of light on a surfboard-like craft. The Silver Surfer began as a young astronomer named Norrin Radd who saves his home planet from Galactus, a giant planet-eating villain, by becoming his herald. Now imbued with a portion of Galactus' "Power Cosmic," the Silver Surfer roams the universe looking for planets Galactus can consume.
